Consignment Volume Estimation: Planning Ocean Cargo Shipments
Published: 6/7/20265 min read
Ocean Freight Volume Planning When shipping goods internationally from manufacturing hubs like China or India, managing cargo volume is key to budgeting.
LCL vs. FCL Shipments * **LCL (Less than Container Load)**: Your goods share space with other shippers. Billing is based on total CBM volume. LCL is cost-effective for shipments under 15 CBM. * **FCL (Full Container Load)**: You rent a whole container. Standard containers hold: - **20ft Container**: Fits ~28 to 30 CBM. - **40ft Container**: Fits ~60 to 65 CBM. - **40ft High Cube**: Fits ~70 to 75 CBM.
If your shipment is 12 CBM or more, it is often cheaper to book a full 20ft container (FCL) instead of paying LCL rates, due to cheaper terminal handling charges.
